BANDITS' TERRITORIAL SCHOOLS MODIFIED TO INCLUDE
ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY
The Las Vegas Bandits can now lay claim to players from Arizona State University in future SFL Territorial Drafts, the team announced recently.
The league recently approved a change to its drafting of college talent,
and expanded the number of each team's Territorial Schools from 2 to 3.
The addition of ASU comes on the heels of the sudden departure of the
Phoenix Scorpions to Louisville, Kentucky, where they will begin play as
the Cougars. Phoenix long suffered from ownership problems and
attendance woes, and was under league stewardship for much of its
existence. A new owner agreed to terms with the league to take
control of the new Cougars, and the City of Louisville became the proud
new host of the team. Louisville had been courting the SFL for a
team for some time, and both the City and the League are happy with the
new arrangement.
The Bandits and the San Diego Diablos were allowed by the league to
modify their Territorial Schools selections to include the former
choices of the Phoenix Scorpions. San Diego chose the University
of Arizona, while the Bandits were allowed to choose Arizona State
University. By doing so, the SFL maintains a strong presence in
the Arizona market while still holding an option for a future expansion
back into this market.
Both San Diego and the Bandits are excited about this new development.
"This is a great development for both [the Bandits] and the Diablos,"
commented Bandits owner Warren Willis Jr. "This gives both of our
teams draft selections from two very good PAC-10 schools, as well as
expanded presences in a very lucrative market. It's a win-win for
everybody involved, especially the league."
The Bandits previously had selected the University of Utah as their third Territorial School
selection, but this was before the Scorpions' move to Louisville was
announced. The SFL Owners' Committee held a referendum to decide
the fates of Arizona and ASU for Territorial School selections, and
these schools were then allocated to the Diablos and Bandits,
respectively.
League rules dictate that at least one eligible player must be drafted from
each Territorial School in each Territorial Draft in order for the team
to maintain its exclusive claim to the schools. The Territorial
Draft is a tool used by the league to maintain a high content of local
talent for each team.
