The Las Vegas Bandits have signed journeyman NFL QB Scott
Covington to a 3-year contract, the team announced on Friday. In
order to make room on the roster for Covington, backup QB Danny Kanell
was released.
Covington described his interest in the Bandits as
"serious," and said the he wants "to be a part of a winner and Las Vegas
has a bright future that I'd like to be a part of."
Head Coach Chan Gailey
excited by the news, even though it meant letting backup QB Danny Kanell
go. "Danny's a good guy and I hate to let him go," Gailey said
Friday morning. "He had a real good grasp on our system here and
was catching on very well. However, when we had the chance to see
Scott in a workout earlier this week, he looked very sharp.
He looked like a natural for our offensive system, and the decision was
made right then and there to sign him."
QB Ricky Ray is still the
incumbent Bandits starter, and Covington will be Ray's backup for the
remainder of the season, barring injury or other unforeseen
circumstances.
In
more transactions today, the Bandits made some changes to their
secondary by re-signing CB Darrel Crutchfield (released at end of
preseason) and released rookie CB Rayshun Reed. The team's
secondary has been victimized in each of the first two games of the
regular season, and hopes that the re-signing of Crutchfield will help
stem the tide of completed passes.
