The league's team owners came to a
unanimous decision to kick off the SFL Fall College Draft early.
The agreement was only supposed to cover the first round, but by popular
demand was extended to the second round by the end of the weekend.
The Bandits surprised nearly everybody present by selecting QB Tarvaris
Jackson (Jackson State) with their first-round selection. "We need
a franchise quarterback for future stability, and we felt that Jackson
was the best fit available," said GM Patricia Willis. "We were
tempted to try to wait until the second round, but with our [draft]
position we didn't feel that he'd still be available by then."
The team was interested in DT Claude Wroten with their second-round
selection, but he was picked ahead of the Bandits by Columbus. The
Bandits then picked OT Marcus McNeill (Auburn) with their second-round
selection. "We couldn't believe that Marcus was still available,
and with Wroten already gone, we felt he was the best available option,"
said Willis. "We felt that he would be a very valuable addition to
the offensive line, complementing [All-SFL] OT Matt Light."
With such an expensive addition in QB Tarvaris Jackson, it's not hard to
justify the expensive addition of OT Marcus McNeill. Many expected
the team to select Wroten, who could have added a badly-needed
run-stopping ability to one of the league's worst units. "While
comparing the available draft talent with the available free agency
pool, we felt that we would better off by drafting a franchise QB with
our first-round pick," said Willis. " We have options in other
areas."
