The Bandits are
proud to announce the signing of DE Charles Alston, drafted in the
second round from Bowie State. Alston is expected to fill the
shoes of departed free agent Adewale Ogunleye, and will wear #90 as a
Bandit. Alston's number holds a couple of special significances:
it was Ogunleye's former number was a Bandit, and is also Alston's
former college number.

When his high school coach,
Henry Frazier, became head coach at Bowie State defensive end Charles
Alston knew that he wanted to return home to play for his football
mentor. "Coach has always been a big part of the reason I have been so
successful, so this is where I wanted to be", according to the 6-foot-6,
275-pound All-CIAA performer. Alston is a special athlete, who combines
natural size, speed and tremendous athleticism for his position. He
transferred in after playing at Independence CC, but gained national
attention last fall by playing in both a college football and basketball
game on the same day.

#90 DE Charles Alston is one of the premier defenders in all of Division
II football.
|
On November 17th,
Alston traveled with the Bulldogs to play Cheyney University in
Pennsylvania, and after recording four tackles and one sack in a
season-ending victory he turned around and drove about two hours to
Washington D.C. in order to suit up against the University of District
of Columbia. "He certainly made a big difference for the team last year,
said Bulldogs' SID Scott Rouch, "We're excited about what Chuck may be
able to accomplish this season." Alston was named third-team Division II
All-American after his junior campaign, as he recorded 68 tackles, 17
tackles for loss, seven sacks, forced three fumbles and broke up three
passes.
He uses the conditioning, hand/eye coordination and
agility of playing power forward and center on the basketball team to
help ready himself for his battles in the trenches. However, he intends
to concentrate soley on football and academics this fall, as he is only
three semesters short of earning a degree in Pathology. This kid is
truly taking full advantage of his opportunity to enjoy the
student-athlete portion of college. He will enter his senior year as a
pre-season All-American, while taking 15 credits, which is a full course
load.

Alston's basketball jersey and football pants have been displayed at the
NCAA Football Hall of Fame since his unusual feat last November.
|
On the field, Alston is a very
good two-way defender, and although his size and pass rushing skills
jump out at you first, he is also a very strong run defender. He has a
long wingspan that blocks opposing quarterback's vision, but tends to
stay low and keeps blockers away from his legs by using his hands.
Alston rotates back and fourth between both end position, although he
prefers to play with his left hand down. His insertion into the lineup
helped the Bulldogs defensive unit hold opponents to below 15 points per
game, less than three yards per carry and they had the top-rated unit in
the CIAA in terms of lowest points allowed in the second half of games.
Alston has been dedicating some of his spare
time to hitting the weight room, as he would like to play this season at
over 280 pounds. His long frame will make it possible for him to carry
285-290 pounds without losing any speed or athleticism. He has raised
his 225-pound bench press into the mid-20 range, while possessing a
35-plus inch vertical. |
